Rod St. Aubyn: Barack Obama Has Made America Less Safe

With the recently announced Iran Nuclear Accord, the Obama administration has not made America and the Middle East safer, but in reality less safe.

I have never been more concerned with this administration than with this announcement. Instead of dealing with what is truly an “Evil Empire”, we have given the radical terrorists a real boost of funding and freedom for acquiring new arms. I totally recognize that the real problem is with the leaders of Iran and not with the average Iranian. However, we negotiated this new accord with their government, who have been recognized as supporters of such terrorists as Hezbollah and other radical Islamic terrorists. Intelligence sources proved that several of the IED’s used in the Iraqi War against American soldiers were made in Iran.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei spoke in Tehran on July 18, 2015, just days after the announced accord. According to a news report Iran’s supreme leader “hailed the Iranian masses for demanding the destruction of Israel and America, and said he hoped that God would answer their prayers.” The leader also vowed in his speech that “the nuclear agreement with the major powers would not change Iran’s policy against the “arrogant American government”.

He is quoted as saying “The Islamic Republic of Iran will not give up support of its friends in the region – the oppressed people of Palestine, of Yemen, the Syrian and Iraqi governments, the oppressed people of Bahrain and sincere resistance fighters in Lebanon and Palestine… Our policy will not change with regards to the arrogant US government.” In other words they will continue to provide state support for radical Islamic terrorists.

They will continue to support the Syrian government. You may recall that Syria is the same government that used nerve gas on their own people and has harbored ISIS members within their borders. Oh yeah, I am sure you may recall President Obama’s tough “line in the sand” declaration. He has since done little about the ever increasing violence in Syria and Iraq.

Mohammad Youusef Abdulazeez, the naturalized American-turned Islamic radical who killed 5 Marines last Thursday in Chattanooga, reportedly took a seven-month trip to Jordan and possibly Yemen. May I remind you of the troubles that exist in that country right now? Oh yeah, that is one of the countries listed in support by the leadership of Iran. How many people have the financial support to spend 7 months without working in a foreign country? Where did he get his money to support himself?

The Obama administration not only lauded this Accord which will provide relief of reportedly $150 billion worth of sanctions, but agreed to a last minute Iranian proposal to lift the embargo on the sale of conventional weapons and missiles. At the same time, the US never attempted to gain the release of several American hostages.

CNN reported that the US estimates that the Accord will take Iran from being able to build a nuclear bomb from 2 to 3 months to at least 1 year. It does NOT permanently prevent them from building a nuclear weapon. This Accord will simply increase the arms race in the Mideast.

There will be inspections of their nuclear sites, but those inspections require a 24 day notice – a 24 day notice. This whole inspection issue reminds me of the inspections prior to the Iraqi War where Saddam Hussein basically played games with the inspectors. And to make matters even more ironic, in this Iran Accord the US is not allowed to be one of the inspectors. There are snapback provisions in the Accord to re-implement the sanctions.

However, how long will it take the UN Security Council to approve the sanctions and will Russia agree with it or Veto any new sanction? As far as I can see, any violations will be another Obama “line in the sand” bluff. We have sanctions now, but there is no guarantee that sanctions will be re-implemented if there are violations.

Israel, our closest Mideast ally, is very troubled with this Accord. The Jewish voter is a very important voting bloc in the American electorate. For reasons that I cannot not totally understand, the Jewish vote has been primarily supportive of Democrats in the presidential elections. When Congress takes up this accord it will be interesting to see how the Democrat Representatives and Senators vote. This new accord may also play into the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton and other Democratic candidates.

I hope that the public makes their Senators and Representatives realize how bad this accord is for America. With the radical Islamic terrorists declaring war on America and getting their American sympathizers to act in America like what may have happened in Chattanooga, why would we want to adopt an accord that gives even more funding to these terrorists? This new accord does not make America safer. It will only increase violence and increase the nuclear arms race in the Mideast.
