POWERS-LESS: University of Texas President Bill Powers will resign in 2015

University of Texas President Bill Powers, under heavy fire following the disclosure of political favoritism in the law school, will stay on until June 2, 2015, according to a statement released Wednesday afternoon by Francisco Cigarroa, chancellor of the University of Texas System.

Powers asked Cigarroa to be allowed to stay on through the end of the 2015 session of the Legislature, conclude a $3 billion capital campaign, oversee the start of construction a $310 million engineering center and push forward on the Dell Medical School, the statement said.

“I honor his commitment to UT Austin and agree that this is the best course forward,” Cigarroa’s statement reads. View the complete text of the statement here.

The University of Texas Board of Regents is expected to discuss the future of Powers with UT at its meeting Thursday. Cigarroa had earlier said he would call for Powers to resign or be fired.
