Texas continues to lead nation in domestic migration

REALTOR REPORT: As many flock to Texas, its pre-eminence as a destination for domestic migration has begun to strain the existing infrastructure.

Texas continues to lead the nation in domestic migration; it is the number one destination for people moving from one state to another.

The Texas Association of Realtors’ 2014 Relocation Report says Texas gained 584,034 people from out-of-state in 2013. Harris County welcomed the largest number of people among that group with 84,707 new residents. After subtracting the number who left Texas in the same period, Texas is left with 138,057 new residents.

The top five states that new Texans left behind were California, Florida, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Illinois.

In a statement, TAR chairman Dan Hatfield said, “Texas’ reign as the top ‘domestic migration destination’ in the nation continues to be fueled by unprecedented economic growth.”
