On Sunday he was found dead in his Fargo apartment by police who, according to the Bismarck Tribunewere responding to a call to check on a “suicidal individual.”

According to early reports there is no evidence of foul play. No cause of death has been reported.

“We are very saddened that Nicholas Spaeth has passed away,” Governor Jack Dalrymple said of Spaeth’s death in a news release. “He served the state of North Dakota faithfully as attorney general for two full terms. Our prayers are with his family and friends.”

Spaeth was 64 years old.

A couple of years back Spaeth filed discrimination lawsuits against a number of universities claiming they had passed over him for a position because of his age. At least one of those suits, against Georgetown Law, was dismissed.
