Port: Lawmaker accused and cleared of sexual harassment files bill to criminalize false accusations

MINOT, N.D. — A state lawmaker and University of North Dakota professor accused, and ultimately cleared , of Title IX violations last year has now submitted a bill that would criminalize false and frivolous complaints.

Rep. Eric Murphy, who at the time was a Republican candidate for a seat in the state House but not yet elected, was cleared by an administrative law judge of accusations related to sexual harassment or discrimination. Now House Bill 1256 , introduced by Murphy, would make it a class C felony to file a false claim of sexual harassment or discrimination under federal Title IX policies or the policies of any state institution.
