PLAY BALL: Biloxi’s new baseball team is yet to be named. MGM has already bought the naming rights to the taxpayer-funded stadium.

Biloxi’s new minor-league baseball team — which will play in a $35 million taxpayer-funded stadium — is conducting a name-the-team contest.

The Huntsville Stars are scheduled to start play at a new stadium in Biloxi in 2015. The Stars are the Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers and play in the Southern League, which has teams in Pearl (Mississippi Braves), Mobile (BayBears) and Pensacola (Blue Wahoos).

Since the stadium is going to be funded with a $21 million bond issue from the city of Biloxi and $15 million in funds from the BP settlement, here are some suggestions:

  • Biloxi Taxpayer Funds
  • Biloxi Government Grants
  • Biloxi Crony Capitalists
  • Biloxi Bond Issues
  • Biloxi Tax Incentives

The contest, which would provide two tickets to the 2015 home opener for the winning entry, ends May 31.

Hopefully, the new team plays better than these guys:
