5-year-old’s shooting death hits close to home for Omaha city councilman

OMAHA—The shooting death of a five-year-old girl is hitting close to home at City Hall.
Payton Benson, who was shot and killed while eating breakfast in her north side home Wednesday, is related to City Councilman Ben Gray—Gray’s nephew is the girl’s father.
According to police about 9:45 they received several reports of shots fired near 45th and Bedford. One witness reportedly heard more than a dozen stray shots.
Officer Michael Pecha tells reporters the girl was taken in extremely critical condition to the hospital where she later died.
The investigation is still underway.
