Being “woke,” in so far as that term refers to the impulse to infantilize the masses, treating them as hapless victims who can’t bear up to the hardships and humiliations of being human, is not some new development.
“Woke” is just a modern appellation for a well-established facet of human nature. Specifically, the desire to stop people from enjoying things. For their own good, supposedly.
The recent spat over the expurgation of famed author Roald Dahl’s works , which saw the owners of Dahl’s literary estate collaborating with a consultant group with the Orwellian name “Inclusive Minds” to remove nasty epithets like “fat” and “bald,” is not some new Rubicon our society has crossed.
