The folks at CQ Roll Call – who publish both the newspaper Roll Call and Congressional Quarterly – have launched the 50 State Project to sign a light on what is happening in the states. To do so they invited 72 reporters, including Peabody and Pulitzer Prize winners, to contribute a report about what’s going on in their states.

For North Dakota they asked me to contribute, which I was happy to do for such an auspicious project.

I’ll admit that it was a little hard to tackle my assignment to write about the most pressing topics in North Dakota. I was first given the assignment a couple of months ago, right before our legislative session began. But as the session rolled on, and as falling oil prices have quickly changed the dynamics of the state’s economy and politics, things changed.

I hope I did a good job of capturing what’s important in our state right now.
