Please Stop Calling for Stephen Colbert to Be Fired

0

I’m sure you’ve all heard, but late night host Stephen Colbert said some pretty ugly things about President Donald Trump recently.

“The only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s c**k holster,” he said during diatribe on his CBS show (video here if you care to watch).

This has prompted widespread calls for Colbert to be fired. He’s since walked the comments back, simultaneously saying that he doesn’t regret the rant but also would have changed some of the words.

I’m wondering why anyone cares about this sort of thing.

I guess we could talk about the utter hypocrisy of a left-wing celebrity using a reference to gay sex as a pejorative. I’d like to think that in 2017 we’re beyond insulting straight men by suggesting they’re homosexuals.

As if homosexual men are somehow lesser than straight men.

They should want his mean spirited antics broadcast nightly as a shining example of every ugly, hateful thing the American left stands for.[/mks_pullquote]

But is Colbert even worth our time? He’s just another boring celebrity in a crowded field of entertainers hoping his particular flavor of increasingly crude, spittle-flecked opprobrium will draw clicks and eyeballs.

What this marginally talented dunderhead wants is attention. So stop giving it to him.

And please, stop calling for him to be fired.

The American left has been losing political power for the better part of a decade now in no small part because of their shrill denunciations of anyone who strays from liberal dogmas. The “progressives” define everyone from pro-lifers to advocates for immigration reform to climate change skeptics as misogynistic, bigoted, anti-science fascists.

Not surprisingly this intolerant world view shouted daily at the American hoi polloi from an ideologically homogeneous entertainment and media industry concentrated in the nation’s urban/coastal enclaves has alienated vast swaths of the electorate.

The last thing right-of-center Americans should want is for Stephen Colbert to be fired. They should want his mean spirited antics broadcast nightly as a shining example of every ugly, hateful thing the American left stands for.

The other thing right-of-center Americans should want to avoid is looking as shrill and intolerant as the left has become.

Let Colbert crack his ugly jokes. He’s not persuading anybody.

And if you really want him off air, ignore him. Don’t watch his YouTube clips. Don’t write Facebook posts about him. Don’t tune in to his show.

The worst reaction Colbert could ever get is no reaction at all.
