Senator Heitkamp Votes to Protect Funding for Sanctuary Cities

While her latest Republican challenger, Congressman Kevin Cramer, basks in national attention stemming from his decision to run for the Senate, incumbent Senator Heidi Heitkamp quietly cast a vote to protect funding for sanctuary cities.

Sanctuary cities, for the uninitiated, are communities which refuse to cooperate with federal authorities in identifying and apprehending illegal immigrants.

“Senate Democrats blocked a proposal on Thursday that would crack down on cities that don’t comply with federal immigration law,” The Hill reports.

The amendment, offered by Pennsylvania Republican Pat Toomey, failed on a 54-45 vote (it needed 60 votes to survive). “Democratic Sens. Joe Donnelly (Ind.), Joe Manchin (W.Va.), Claire McCaskill (Mo.) and Debbie Stabenow (Mich.) — who are each up for reelection in states won by Trump — supported the measure,” reports The Hill.

Missing from that list?

North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp, who is also up for reelection in a pro-Trump state.

As you can see in this video of the vote, Heitkamp was among those Senators saying no to the amendment.

The amendment, if passed, would have limited the flow of federal dollars to sanctuary cities.

No word on if Senator Heitkmap high-fived Chuck Schumer after this vote too.
