Roscoe Streyle: Doug Burgum Will Say Anything To Win

0

In a desperate attempt to save a failing campaign, Doug Burgum unleashed a nasty new TV ad attacking Republican statewide elected officials and legislators. In the ad, Burgum claims to be a conservative who opposes state spending and property taxes.

Here is the truth.

The increased state spending Burgum complains about was mostly one-time spending that paid for property tax relief, flood protection, water supply projects, schools, safer roads, increased law enforcement, and much needed funding for oil-impacted communities. Instead, Burgum says the money should have been used to pay for expanded Internet access in North Dakota.

Internet over safer road and communities?  You have got to be kidding!  North Dakota already has some of the highest, most reliable Internet speeds and options in the country thanks to investments by the private sector, not the Government, from companies like SRT Communications, ND Telephone Company, CenturyLink, Northwest Communications Cooperative, and Midco.

Burgum also claims he supports lower property taxes, but his record says something else. Burgum has received millions in property tax breaks, income tax exemptions and government subsidies for his downtown Fargo building projects. The result of these sweetheart deals is that everyone else in Fargo pays higher property taxes, but not Doug Burgum.

Burgum is no friend to property taxpayers!

Clearly, Burgum will say anything and spend any amount of money to win even if it means tearing down Republicans and helping Democrats win this fall. But we shouldn’t be surprised by Burgum’s negative campaign attacks. After all, his campaign is being run by a slick Washington DC political firm.

This is not how we do things in North Dakota.
