Gary Emineth, a Republican state Senate candidate from the Bismarck area, is also the organizer behind what will be Measure 2 on our general election ballots later this year. It’s the constitutional amendment to ban non-citizen voting in North Dakota (you can read it in full here).

That sort of voting is already illegal by statute, but Emineth and the measure’s supporters argue that a constitutional ban is necessary to ensure that it isn’t allowed in the future as has been the case in some local elections in other parts of the country.

Today Emineth shared with me polling results from the Remington Research Group (they have a “C” rating from FiveThirtyEight.com, and a slight Democratic bias) which indicates that a very large majority of North Dakotans support a ban on non-citizen voting.

You can read the full polling memo below. It states that the survey was “conducted August 26 through August 27, 2018” and that “1,125 likely 2018 General Election voters participated in the survey.”

Here’s the top-line result:

The memo notes that when the pro and con arguments for the measure are read out to respondents, support for the measure grew to 79 percent.

The memo also breaks down responses by demographics and geography. Interestingly, even among self-described Democrats and liberals, the amendment has majority support:
