On this episode of Plain Talk, Senator John Hoeven (R-North Dakota) talks about his role on a conference committee which is tasked with finding a compromise on border security to avoid another government shutdown.

The committee had its first meeting this week, and Hoeven says he’s optimistic about finding an agreement.

“The President is offering bonafide compromises,” he told me of the negotiations.

Hoeven says he’d like to “bring in the border professionals” to determine what sort of physical barrier or other security measures ought to be considered for the border, adding that he’s confident some sort of physical barrier is what they’d support.

As for Democrats, if they don’t give some ground during these negotiations, “I think that shows up at the ballot box,” Hoeven said.

Also, Senator Kevin Cramer (R-North Dakota) is under attack from supporters of Heidi Heitkamp (who he replaced in the Senate) because he is…co-sponsoring a piece of legislation she supports?
