Plain Talk: Senator Cramer Says He’s “Sure” Trump Supports Electoral College Because It Won Him Election in 2016

President Donald Trump is widely seen as a populist leader. So why, in the wake of criticism of the Electoral College from Democrats, would he be saying he supports it given that it’s a decidedly anti-populist institution?

Asked on this episode of Plain Talk if maybe Trump supports the Electoral College because it was why he won in 2016, Senator Kevin Cramer said “I’m sure it is.”

“I’ve never talked to him personally about it,” Cramer added. Before the 2016 election Trump had previously been supportive of settling elections through the national popular vote.

The Senator personally supports the Electoral College. “The founders put it in our Constitution…to prevent large population states from running over small population states,” he said.

Cramer also addressed a listener question about border wall funding potentially pulling funding away from military projects here in North Dakota. “The list was every possible construction project where the funding hasn’t been awarded,” he said media reports indicating three North Dakota projects were on a list of possible sources for funds. “The whole list is like 400 percent of the funding needed,” he continued, adding that “simple math” indicates that it’s a low probability the projects in this state will be cut or delayed for the border wall.

The first term Senator also got questions about trade policy and the national debt.
