Plain Talk: If the Voters Cast Their Ballots for Bad Policy, Does That Suddenly Make It Good Policy?

0

On this episode of the Plain Talk Podcast, state Rep. Jake Blum (R-Grand Forks) talks about his legislation to raise speed limits on North Dakota’s highways and interstates.

Also, the Fargo Forum suddenly editorial lashes out at Republican lawmakers for supposedly disrespecting the will of the people when it comes to implementing Measure 1, which was approved by voters in the election last year. But the Forum also editorialized against Measure 1, arguing that it shouldn’t be approved because it represents a too severe crack down on speech rights.

Are lawmakers duty bound to implement bad policy simply because voters approved it? Don’t lawmakers also have a mandate from the people who elected them to do their jobs? Aren’t checks and balances in policy making a good thing?
