TOM STROMME.Tribune House Majority leader Rep. Al Carlson (R-Fargo), left, and Rep. Roscoe Streyle (R-Minot) both questioned the numbers in state budget revenue projections announced on Wednesday.

State Rep. Roscoe Streyle, who was first elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives in 2010, has shared with me that he’s not seeking a third term.

“Been a tough day, but I’m making the best decision for myself and my family, it’s really that simple,” he told me this morning.

He’s circulating the letter below explaining his decision.

“I will most likely regret this decision, but the regret I have by not being home for ALL of my children’s memories far outweighs any of that regret,” he writes in the letter. “I couldn’t be prouder of my service and what I’ve accomplished for the Great State of North Dakota and my community.

Streyle is perhaps more well-known than may North Dakota lawmakers due to his outspoken approach to politics, particularly on social media. This has made him something of a target in left wing circles in the state, including one online petition to “impeach” him, but Streyle says that stuff hasn’t impacted his decision.

“Some will certainly celebrate this decision and that’s fine because politics is a rough and tumbled business, I’ve never cared what the haters think and never will,” he writes in his letter.

Jim Poolman, who took over interim duties as Chairman of the NDGOP when former chair Kelly Armstrong entered the U.S. House race, said the “Legislature’s going to lose a very good lawmaker.”

“Not many lawmakers know the budget like Roscoe,” he said adding that Streyle is a “consistent advocate for Minot” and was possibly a future chairman of the powerful Appropriations Committee.

Streyle was elected in Minot’s District 3 alongside fellow Representative Andrew Maragos and state Senator Oley Larsen.
