On Day of Heitkamp’s Farewell Speech, Democrat Leader in the Senate Trashes North Dakota

President Donald Trump meets with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), not pictured, at the White House in Washington, Dec. 11, 2018.In an extraordinarily public altercation with Democratic congressional leaders, Trump vowed here to block full funding for the government if they refused his demand for a wall, saying he was “proud to shut down the government for border security.” (Doug Mills/The New York Times)

It’s pretty clear that Democrats don’t have much affinity for states like North Dakota. Even our liberal friends right here in North Dakota often talk about our state as though they wish they lived somewhere else.

What’s kinda rare, though, is when Democrats come right out and admit this stuff.

Today there was a remarkable exchange, in full view of the press, between President Donald Trump, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelsoi, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. The trio got heated talking about funding for Trump’s border wall, and the remarks got angry. And candid, including this exchange between Trump and Schumer which had the latter dismissing the importance of North Dakota:

Trump and Schumer also exchanged zingers over recent midterm elections.

“Elections have consequences, Mr. President,” Schumer said.

“And that’s why the country is doing so well,” the president shot back.

Schumer jabbed Trump over boasting that Republicans kept control of the Senate.

“When a president brags that he’s won Indiana and North Dakota, he’s in real trouble,” Schumer said.

“We did!” Trump replied. “We did win.”

Yeah, who cares about North Dakota, right?

It’s deeply ironic that Schumer’s jab at North Dakota took place even as Senator Heidi Heitkamp delivered her (very awkward, very angry) farewell speech in the Senate chamber.

Here’s the video of the whole, testy meeting. A transcript is here.
