New Yorkers Gave Almost Three Times More Money to Heidi Heitkamp Than North Dakotans Did

The federal candidates like Senator Heidi Heitkamp and Republican challenger Tom Campbell released their fundraising totals for 2017 a while ago, and of course those totals generated headlines. Mostly about how much money Heitkamp has raised.

But the actual disclosure reports behind those numbers just recently became available from the FEC, and they tell an interesting story. Especially when it comes to the geography of the contributions.

For instance, according to Senator Heitkamp’s disclosures, she raised more than 94 percent of her itemized individual campaign dollars from out of state in 2017. New York was the top source for Heitkamp’s fundraising followed by Texas, Washington D.C., California, and Massachussets.

North Dakota – you know, the state that actually elects her to the Senate – came in 6th. In fact, New Yorkers gave more than 2.7 times more campaign cash to Heitkamp than North Dakotans did.

This table/map breaking down Heitkamp’s itemized donations from individuals by state is from the FEC (click for a larger view):

Meanwhile, according to the FEC state Senator Tom Campbell has received more than 86 percent of his itemized individual campaign contributions from North Dakotans (not counting the loans he’s made to his own campaign which constitute most of his fundraising total). He received contributions in 2017 from just two states, North Dakota and Minnesota.

Neither Paul Schaffner, who announced his Senate campaign last week, nor Thomas O’Neill who announced his earlier this year, have filed disclosure reports with the FEC yet. Gary Emineth’s Senate campaign ended yesterday and wasn’t around long enough to generate any reports. All of these gentlemen are Republicans.

Congressman Kevin Cramer hasn’t announced a run for the Senate yet. That’s expected later this week. He has been fundraising for his U.S. House campaign, and more than 51 percent of his itemized individual contributions have come from North Dakota according to the FEC. After our state Texas, Colorado, Virginia, and Washington D.C., round out Cramer’s top five states for contributions:
