Native American Activist Chase Iron Eyes Expected To Announce U.S. House Campaign

Native American activist and attorney Chase Iron Eyes is expected to announce a campaign for the U.S. House as a Democrat.

He is expected to make the announce tomorrow. The hall hosting the Democrat state convention in Bismarck will be decorated with his printed flyers and signs tomorrow.

He will be challenging Republican Kevin Cramer who is currently running for a third term in office, and Libertarian Party candidate Jack Seaman.

Iron Eyes is a graduate of the University of North Dakota. He has worked for the Lakota People’s Law Project and is a founder of Last Real Indians, a Native America news website.

He is possessed of some…interesting political views. Perhaps the best indicator that Iron Eyes is running for public office is that he seems to have deleted the Twitter account mentioned in his bio on LRI. UPDATE: Looks like the guy took down his Facebook page too.

You can read an archive of his LRI articles here, including this one where he expresses some solidarity with the armed occupiers at a wildlife refuge in Oregon and wonders if perhaps Native Americans should do the same in the Black Hills.

“Can you imagine a completely legit, open-carry, armed, peaceful take-over of the Black Hills?” he writes.

No. I really can’t.

Iron Eyes is also a staunch opponent of things like pipelines and oil drilling and coal mining, which ought to be horribly inconvenient for Democrats in a state that is generally pro-fossil fuel energy development.

The only reason Heidi Heitkamp is a U.S. Senator is because she campaigned like a Republican on energy issues.

I can’t wait to hear Democrats try to reconcile Heitkamp’s pro-oil, pro-coal stance with this guy’s platform.

UPDATE: Iron Eyes says Cramer’s apparent support for Donald Trump is one reason why he’s running:

Iron Eyes said Cramer’s apparent support for GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump also enticed him to run for Congress.

“Part of why I’m seeking the endorsement is because I think that the Republicans are having to question themselves. They’re having an identity crisis because of Donald Trump. Reasonable Republicans having to be asking themselves, how did this happen?” he said.

“Trump represents a lot of fear, a lot of ignorance … the antithesis to the social evolution that is our country,” he added. “We need to take steps forward, not backward.”

Cramer hasn’t officially endorsed Trump, but he’s flirted with it.
