“I’ve gotten a lot of support,” Macy Christianson, Miss North Dakota 2016, told me during a radio interview today. “People have been coming up and thanking me.”

She was referring to her speech yesterday before lawmakers during which she thanked them for opposing abortion.

“I have immense respect for our state for having taken a stand for what I believe is right in regard to abortion,” she said during a short address in the state Senate (video here). “I have had people tell me that North Dakota is against women and our rights. I have to disagree, because not only do we support our women but we support our women who are unborn and can’t speak for themselves.”

“Normally I would stay away from things that are controversial,” she told me during our interview today, but said she felt compelled to speak out because “several people have come up me and said ‘North Dakota is against women’.”

“That really bothered me,” she added.

She did say that she had to check with the pageant organizers to ensure that it was ok to mention the controversial topic, but learned that it was ok as long as she made it clear that the views she expressed were her own.
