Heitkamp Wants National Gun Violence Commission

Those wanting to give Senator Heidi Heitkamp credit for standing up for President Obama on the gun control issue might want to subject her statement in response to the President’s gun control agenda announced yesterday.

Because Heitkamp’s problems with the proposal is that it a) doesn’t go far enough and b) doesn’t layer on yet another federal bureaucracy tasked with addressing gun violence:

“My highest priority is, and always will be, protecting our children and securing our schools,” she said. “I do not believe that the President’s proposal was as broadly inclusive or exhaustive as the severity of this subject requires. We must have a serious assessment of mental health services available to families and communities. We must also do everything we can to identify potential perpetrators and prevent those individuals from ever taking the lives of innocent children. I believe that it is unnecessary to violate the Second Amendment to keep schools and children safe.”

Heitkamp added that she, along with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.VA), another moderate Democrat, would like to see the administration include the creation of a national commission on mass violence.

You know what politicians do when they don’t want to reveal their true positions by handling a situation directly? They create some new commission or panel to handle the issue.

Heidi Heitkamp is no friend of the 2nd amendment. She just doesn’t want her pro-gun constituents to know about it.
