Donald Trump’s Approval at 53 Percent in North Dakota

0

In November of 2016 voters in North Dakota overwhelmingly cast their ballots for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton, 62.9 percent to 27.3 percent.

Just a few months later, in January of 2017, the folks at Morning Consult measured Trump’s approval/disapproval numbers in North Dakota at 56 percent/33 percent.

Now, a year later in January of 2018, Trump’s approval rating in the state has fallen a bit but remains strong. He’s at 53 percent approval and 42 percent approval according to the latest numbers.

Interestingly, North Dakota has actually moved up the ranking list of pro-Trump states despite that slight decline in approval. In the January of 2017 iteration of this poll North Dakota ranked 12th among the states for approving of Trump. Per the most recent numbers, North Dakota now ranks 11th.

Trump’s net approval rating – the distance between his approval and disapproval numbers – has fallen over the year. It was +23 back in January of 2017. It was +11 last month, though that mostly has to do with undecideds in the previous poll switching to disapproval. The pro-Trump number hasn’t really moved.

What does all this add up to? Not much has changed for Trump in North Dakota.

North Dakota Republicans – notably U.S. Senate candidates Tom Campbell and Gary Emineth, along with Congressman Kevin Cramer – have closely aligned themselves with President Trump. That probably remains a safe political bet. Democrats, meanwhile, who were perhaps hoping that Trump would become a liability for Republicans here had better not count on it.

Here are the approval/disapproval numbers for Trump in neighboring states:

  • MN: 41/55
  • MT: 48/48
  • SD: 53/43
